AIDS

What is AIDS?

AIDS stand for Acquired Immune Defiance Syndrome.

Acquired: Meaning that it is contagious.
Immune Defiance: Weakness in the body system that fights diseases.
Syndrome: Group of health problems that cause diseases.

How do you get AIDS?

AIDS is caused by a virus called HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). If you get infected by HIV, your body will try to fight the infection by creating little body "warriors" which are called antibodies.

Blood tests could be made to check whether you have HIV. If you do, then your are a HIV-Positive.

Having HIV isn't the same as having AIDS. HIV is contagious and could develop into AIDS through time.

AIDS/HIV can transfer from one to another by:

  • Having sex with an infected person.
  • Sharing a needle (If while taking drugs, or rarely in the hospital).
  • Being born by an infected mother or a HIV-positive mother.
  • Drinking breast milk from an infected woman.

Till now, it isn't proven whether AIDS or HIV could be transmitted through tears or saliva, but from the safe side, it is always important to make sure not to kiss an infected person (Some say that it is possible to get the infection through a deep kiss with an infected person, especially if that person had open sores or bleeding gums).

Quick Facts:

  • India accounts with 10% of the global HIV/AIDS prevalence with an estimated 5.1 million infected in the adult population!
  • During intercourse, for infection to transmitted, only few seconds is required, if lucky!
  • The latest estimate of AIDS holders (end of 2007) is and estimate of 33.2 million people!
  • With an increase of 4 million in 6 years!

Solution:

  • It is very important to check up on yourself every while and then, so that in case you turn out to be HIV-positive, you can take your precautions and fix the best you can (Your nearest hospital, in almost any country, could perform you a HIV test for free).
  • Limiting sex with strangers, and using protection (For safer sex instructions please visit this link: www.thebody.com/content/art6098.html).
  • Making sure in hospitals and at the barbers that the needle or razor is changed to a new one.

Child Abuse

.
.
.
.
.
.

There are many people we meet that seem "weird" to us. What if this person had been abused as a kid? How many years did he need to recover, or what if what happened to him is unrecoverable and his unfortunate past has become a part of his desperate personality? This post is about the hidden bruises of children that are not aware that they have the right to live a healthy and normal life.

Quick Facts:

  • Over 3 million (3,195,000) children were reported for child abuse in only the United States in 1997!
  • Around 85% of prison inmates were abused as children!
  • 1 in 3 girls and 1 in boys are sexually abused by an adult at some time during childhood!
  • Most sexual abusers are someone from the family, or someone the kids know. Not some stranger waiting in the corner with a lollipop!
  • More than 80% of child abusers are parents!
  • Child abuse occurrence happens at the child's home on most cases!
  • 1 out of 10 babies are born to an alcoholic or a drug addict mother!
  • Mothers that drink or take drugs while pregnancy are considered to be abusing their baby!

Types of child abuse:

  • Child Neglect: When kids are not given what they need and are not taken care of. Usually this type of child abuse is not realized by the child until they are older.
  • Emotional Abuse: When kids get yelled at, threatened, frightened, or intimidated. Of course there is a fine line between disciplining and just being yelled at for no reason.
  • Physical Abuse: Child abuse is the easiest to spot. kids could be spotted at school, or anywhere in public with bruises and marks that show that they are being physically abuse.
  • Sexual Abuse: Is when the child is forced to interact in any sort of sexual act.

Signs and Symptoms:

These signs might not necessarily indicate that the child is being abused unless a number of these symptoms appear on the child then it is a very good possibility that the child is suffering abuse:

Sexual Abuse:

  • Showing knowledge about sex in a way that is inappropriate for his age.
  • Medical problems such as chronic itching, pain in the genitals, or venereal disease.
  • Extreme reactions such as suicide attempts, extreme depression, or running away.
  • Sudden loss of appetite.
  • Sudden change in personality.
  • Lack of trust, or fear from people.

Physical Abuse:
  • Unexplained injuries or burns.
  • Improbable excuses, or trying to hide the source of injury.
  • Refusal to undress for gym.
  • Fear of medical help or examination.
  • Aggression towards others.

Emotional Abuse:

.
.
.
.
Neglect:
  • Always hungry.
  • Poor personal hygiene.
  • Constant tiredness.
  • Poor clothing.
  • Untreated medical problems.
  • No, or little social relationships.

It is possible to find a child having several of types of abuse.

Solution:

If anyone notice a combination of the signs above, please don't hesitate to report about it. If you don't and the child suffers from abuse long enough, you are part of the crime, therefor, you are also abusing that child by neglecting him/her!

.
.
.
.
.
.

If a child turns over to you to tell you that he is being abused:

  1. Go talk somewhere quiet.
  2. Believe what the kid is saying.
  3. Be calm.
  4. Listen, but do not press for information.
  5. Tell the child that you are glad that he/she told you.
  6. Let the child feel secure, rather than fear because he/she told you.
  7. If the child told someone else (teacher, principle), contact that person for the good of the child.
  8. Acknowledge that the child has angry, sad or even guilty feelings for what happened.

Pollution

Types of Pollution:

  • Air pollution: Us humens pollute the air and the environment by our factories, by speding chemicals, particular matter, or biological matters. Many birds and animals have died from air pollution (even humens).
  • Land pollution: Is the degration of the earth's land surfaces often caused by humans activity. Haphazard disposal of urban and industrial wastes, exploition of minerals and improper use of soil are the main cause of this pollition.
  • Water polution: The contamination of water bodies such as lakes, seas, rivers, oceans and groundwater, aslo, caused by human activity. This could be harmful to animals, fish, or plants that live underwater. Even us humans could get harmed from this by eating a harmful fish animal.

Quick Facts:

Water:

  • 40% of rivers are too polluted for fishing, swimming, or aquatic life!
  • 46% of lakes are too polluted for fishing, swimming, or aquatic life!
  • Asian rivers are the most polluted in the world! They have 3 times as much bacterias as from the human waste as the global avarege and 20 times more lead than rivers!
  • Slovakia has the lowest compliance with EU guidelines for freshwater areas, with only 22.4% of bathing sites meeting the standards!
  • Thirty percent of Ireland's rivers are polluted with sewage or fertilizer!
  • Pollution of freshwater (drinking water) is a problem for about half of the world's population. Each year there are about 250 million cases of water-related diseases, with roughly 5 to 10 million deaths.!
  • Each year, plastic waste in water and coastal areas kills up to: 100,000 marine mammals, 1 million sea birds, and countless fish!

Land:

  • The World Bank reported in 2002 that pollution causes 2.42 billion dollars worth of damage to the Egyptian environment annually - equaling about 5 percent of the country’s annual gross domestic product!
  • A recent study from Toronto Public Health estimates over 440 deaths a year in the Canadian city can be directly attributed to traffic emissions!

Air:

  • During winter months, 49 percent of soot and other particle pollution in Sacramento is caused by burning wood in fireplaces and wood stoves!
  • According to the World Health Organization, if you are one of the 18 million residents of Cairo: Breathing daily air pollution is like smoking 20 cigarettes a dayand you take in over 20 times the acceptable level of air pollution each day!
  • The risk of cancer from breathing diesel exhaust is about ten times more than ingesting all other toxic air pollutants combined, with diesel emissions contributing to over 70% of the cancer risk from air pollution in the USA! – reported by Environmental Defense.
  • According to the US-EPA, emissions from power plants contribute to over 2,800 lung cancer deaths and 38,200 heart attacks annually in the US!

Solution:

10 things YOU could do to make our lives more healthy:-

  1. Use cast iron pans instead of nonstick. Read about Teflon health concerns.
  2. To avoid chemicals leaching into food, go easy on processed, canned or fast foods and never microwave plastic. Read about Bisphenol A, a toxic food-can lining ingredient associated with birth defects.
  3. Buy organic, or eat vegetables and fruit from the "Cleanest 12" list. Find out more about the "Dirty Dozen."
  4. Use iodized salt to combat chemical interference from the thyroid. Read about rocket fuel's effect on the thyroid.
  5. Seal outdoor wooden structures. Order a test kit to find out if your wooden deck, picnic table, or playset is leaching arsenic.
  6. Leave your shoes at the door. This cuts down on dust-bound pollutants in the home.
  7. Avoid perfume, cologne and products with added fragrance. Search for personal care products that are fragrance-free, or check the products you're already using.
  8. Buy products with natural fibers, like cotton and wool, that are naturally fire resistant. Use our list of products and manufacturers to avoid the chemical flame retardant PBDE.
  9. Eat low-mercury fish like tilapia & pollock, rather than high-mercury choices like tuna & swordfish. Check our Safe Fish List to see which fish to avoid and what's safe to eat.
  10. Filter your water for drinking and cooking. How does your tap water stack up? Search our tap water database to see what you're drinking.

Re: World Hunger

This post is connected to my older post about world hunger. In this post i would just like to talk about a photo taken in 1994 by photographer Kevin Carter. This "Pulitzer Prize" winning photo picture took place during the Sudan Famine, just a kilometer away from the United Nations camp. As the child tries to crawl its way to UN camp for food and shelter, the vulture in the behind waits the kid to give out its last breath to eat it! The photographer died 3 month later due to depression...

World Hunger

Main parts with world hunger

We all heard a lot about world hunger, but did we really HEAR about world hunger. I'm asking you people to open your ears wider and give an effort to JUST know a little bit more about this cause.

Quick Facts:

  • 800 million people are living in what the world bank call "absolute poverty"!
  • 15 million children die every year from starvation!
  • For the price of one missile, a school full of hungry children can eat for 5 years!
  • 3 million people in the world today struggle to live up on $2 per day!
  • In USA: 1 out of 8 children goes to bed "hungry" every night!
  • Every 3.6 seconds, someone die of hunger!
  • So if you are a fast reader, 8 persons have died from hunger since you started to read these facts.

Solution:

  • Since 1997 alone, thanks to many noble people that are volunteering to help the hungry and donate, the vitamin A supplement programme has saved around 300,000 young children. Today even more. World hunger can be solved. Don't think that our world doesn't have enough money or food to feed, there is plenty and even more for all of us. The world agriculture produces 17% more calories per person today than it used to 30 years ago, despite the 70% population increase. Which is enough to provide at least 2,700 calories per person daily - A person needs an average of 2,000 calories daily (depending on the type of body). So there is a solution, and this is not a hopeless cause. Please spread the word around. E-mail this cause to a friend for more awareness about this subject.
  • If you are willing to help and donate, please don't hesitate, and click on the donate button below.

Unlimited Mail Storage

We almost all have e-mails, and we always hate it when they send us that we have reached the end of our limited size. How about if i tell you "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!". Yahoo has gave us the chance to never ever know again that we have reached the end of our limit; therefor, UNLIMITED mail storage! As yahoo has reached its 10th year, it has given us this present (What shall we get yahoo?!).

Unlimited food storage!

Let us look at Yahoo's storage history:

  • 1997: Yahoo! Mail lunches with 4Mbs of storage.
  • 2004: Upgraded to 100Mbs.
  • 2005: Followed by a jump of a 1Gbs!
  • 2007/08/today!: Unlimited!!!

"We hope we’re setting a precedent for the future. Someday, can you imagine a hard drive that you can never fill? Never having to empty your photo card on your camera to get space back? Enough storage to fit the world’s music, and then some, on your iPod? Sounds like a future without limits. Beats a slice of birthday cake, eh?"
